Sometimes a full house clearance is overkill. You just need that old sofa gone. Or the wardrobe in the spare room that you cannot get down the stairs. Or the fridge-freezer that has finally died after twenty years. Edinburgh Clearance offers single-item and multi-item furniture removal as a standalone service β€” usually with a same-week appointment, sometimes next-day if our schedule allows.

Single-Item Collections

We collect single items of furniture or appliance from anywhere within our service area. Common requests include sofas (especially three-seaters that are too big for council uplift), beds and mattresses, wardrobes (often dismantled in situ), dining tables and chair sets, fridges and freezers, washing machines and dryers, electric and gas cookers (we disconnect the electric ones; gas requires a Gas Safe engineer), pianos, and the kind of awkward heavy item that simply will not fit through a single domestic doorway without a struggle. We handle the lifting, dismantling, and disposal β€” you just need to confirm what you want gone.

Multi-Item Loads

If you have several items but not a full clearance β€” perhaps you are redecorating, refurnishing, or doing a partial declutter β€” we will quote on a multi-item basis, which is generally significantly cheaper per item than booking individual collections. Common multi-item jobs include kitchen replacement (old units, white goods and worktops removed), bedroom refurnishing (old wardrobes, beds and chests of drawers out), and post-decoration tidy-ups.

What Happens to the Items

Furniture in good condition is preferentially routed to Edinburgh charity outlets β€” Bethany Christian Trust, Salvation Army, Edinburgh Cyrenians, Shelter Scotland Re-Use stores. We have established relationships with these charities and know what they will and will not accept (fire labels intact, no significant damage, clean condition). Items not suitable for charity are routed to recycling β€” metal furniture to scrap recyclers, upholstered furniture for energy recovery, wood furniture to chipboard manufacture. Very little goes to landfill.

White Goods and Appliances

Fridges and freezers require careful handling because of the refrigerant gases inside, which are regulated under the F-Gas regulations. We take all white goods to licensed Authorised Treatment Facilities where refrigerants are recovered before the appliance is dismantled. Standard washing machines, dryers and dishwashers go through the same WEEE recycling system. We can disconnect plug-in appliances safely; hard-wired or gas appliances may need an electrician or Gas Safe engineer to disconnect first β€” we will tell you at booking which is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you collect?

Often same-week, sometimes next-day if our schedule allows. Phone us and we will give you an honest answer.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes β€” typically a single-item collection charge that reflects vehicle, fuel and disposal costs. For very small items we will tell you honestly if you would be better off using the council bulky uplift, which is free for some items.

Do you accept stained or damaged sofas?

Yes. We will take any sofa, in any condition. We just price it according to what we can do with it β€” items unsuitable for charity reuse carry slightly higher disposal cost.

Can you take a piano?

Yes β€” we are equipped for piano removal, including uprights and small grands. Pianos are heavy and unwieldy and we will price the job accordingly, particularly if there are stairs.

Do you provide a receipt for the council?

If you need a waste transfer note or receipt for council tax records (in the case of a deceased estate, for example), we provide them as standard.
