About Musselburgh
Musselburgh earned its nickname 'The Honest Toun' in 1332, when the townspeople refused payment from the Earl of Mar for nursing him in his final illness. The town traces its roots to Roman times, when a fort stood at Inveresk overlooking the River Esk. Musselburgh has been a royal burgh since 1632 and is home to the world's oldest surviving golf course, Musselburgh Links (1672), and one of Scotland's most picturesque racecourses, founded in 1816. The town today is a busy coastal hub with strong community ties, popular with families and Edinburgh commuters.
