About Galashiels
Galashiels developed as a centre of woollen cloth production from the 18th century, and 'Galashiels tartans' became famous in the 19th century. The town's textile heritage is celebrated at the Heriot-Watt University's School of Textiles and Design. Galashiels was severely affected by the closure of the Waverley railway line in 1969, but the opening of the Borders Railway in 2015 — running from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, just east of Galashiels — has brought new vitality and rising property prices to the area. Galashiels is now home to the Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre.
